Department of Fire Control

Fire Prevention Bureau

Under the direction of the Hawaii Revised Statues, the Fire Chief is required to provide fire protection for the County of Maui. In addition to fire fighting, fire protection includes a wide range of fire prevention measures including the formulation and adoption of fire codes, inspections to insure compliance with the codes, investigations to determine the causes of fires, and education of the public regarding fire safety. The Fire Prevention Bureau is responsible to carry out these duties for the Fire Chief.
The Fire Prevention Bureau is divided into five sections that are headed by a Captain and staffed by one lieutenant, five Fire Fighter III inspectors and one Clerk Typist. The five sections are as follows:
- Code Enforcement
This section consist of one captain and five inspectors. Their primary responsibility is the enforcement of the fire codes and regulations. They also investigate complaints, answer questions from the public, and assist the Fire Education section with requests for fire safety training when necessary.

- Fire Education
This section is assigned to one inspector. His primary responsibility is to develop and implement programs that will increase the public's awareness of fire safety. Educating the public in matters of fire safety is considered to be key to fire prevention. This inspector also concentrates on producing a fire safety guide that is distributed throughout the schools in Maui County from grades K-6 and a contest is held annually with winners selected from different grade levels and the teachers who has the highest participation wins also. This program has shown to be worthwhile for there have been several incidents that children used what they have learned from this program and saved lives.

- Plans Reviewing
This section is handled by a lieutenant. He reviews building plans during the permit process and conducts preliminary site assessments to ensure that fire safety standards are being met prior to construction. He also reviews permit applications for exhibitions, carnivals and other similar types of public assemblies with the help of the other fire inspectors.

- Fire Investigation
This section includes a captain and three inspectors. A large percent of their investigative work is determining the causes of structure fires. They also give testimony in court regarding investigative procedures and findings and prepare their own investigative reports.
