Vacation
Since vacation is subject to collective bargaining, your vacation benefits will vary depending on which bargaining unit you are in. In general, the benefits offered are quite generous. For example, you can accumulate up to 90 days of vacation before you must take your vacation.

Sick Leave
Sick leave is also subject to collective bargaining, so your benefits will vary depending on which bargaining unit you are in, but are also quite generous. For example, eligible employees accumulate sick leave credits from the first work day and keep on accumulating until they retire. Just think, if you get seriously injured or ill, you don't need to worry about your family's income. The check will come twice a month until you have used all your sick leave credits. Upon retirement the unused sick leave credit balance is used to increase your service with the County. For example if you retire with 30 years of service and have 2 years of sick leave credits, your retirement pay will be based on 32 years of service. This can add 2.5 - 5% to your retirement income. Think of it as a free income protection insurance with a kicker.

As a full-time County employee you join the retirement system automatically. You are required to make contributions of 6% of your salary. If you leave the County after 5 years, you can draw retirement pay after you reach 62 years of age. You can retire without penalty when you reach 55 years of age and have worked for 30 years or age 62 and 5 years of service. In addition, a post retirement increase is worked into your retiremenet pay providing you with annual increases. Currently, the annual increase is 2.5% per year.

Competitive Wages
Our wages are competitive with most of the private sector. While some of the starting salaries may seem slightly lower, the fringe benefits raises the total income considerably. Moreover, unlike the private sector, there will virtually never be an occasion where you will hear "There is no work offered today", which means an unpaid day for you.
