Aquatics Section

Program Description

Aquatics has four major components:
  1. Providing lifeguard services, including rescues, first aid and water safety awareness programs at County swimming pools
  2. Facilitating aquatics oriented recreational programs such as learn-to-swim, age-group swimming and diving, exercise and therapeutic classes, water safety and first aid certification classes
  3. Conducting in-service training for County lifeguards to keep water safety skills and certifications up-to-date
  4. Pool maintenance & repairs including pumps, chlorinators, valves, motors, drains, pipe leaks, pool surfaces & heater repairs as well as basic pool vacuuming, filter backwashes and (hazardous) chemical pool treatments to keep water clear and safe.

2020 Junior Lifeguard Program

Wailuku, Hawaii – The County of Maui Department of Parks and Recreation, Aquatics Section announces registration for their Junior Lifeguard Program. Registration will be held at the Kihei Aquatic Center.  Registration is on a first come first serve basis and will continue until all spaces are filled.  Participant and parent/guardian must register in person.  Participant must take and pass a swim test.  Contact Toni Sinnott at (808) 270-6138 or by email for more information.

  • Swim the front crawl 25 yards non-stop
• Tread water for 30 seconds using arms and legs
• Show a level of comfort on the back by floating for 30 seconds
   
Junior Lifeguard
Ages: 10 – 14 years

Course Prerequisites at Registration for Junior Lifeguard
  • Swim the front crawl 50 yards non-stop
• Tread water for 1 minute using arms and legs
• Show a level of comfort on the back by floating for 1 minute
• Swim to a distance of 10 feet and submerge to a depth of 9 feet
American Red Cross Junior Lifeguarding is designed to guide youth to the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course by building a foundation of knowledge, attitudes and skills for future lifeguards.  Participants are not required to master or perfectly execute skills.  Participants learn swim techniques and build stamina during these programs.
