The County of Maui’s www.MauiNuiStrong.info website provides updated information on relief efforts for those impacted by the Maui wildfire disaster and for those who want to lend their support. It also features important links and resources for residents, businesses and visitors.
Mission
To facilitate the rapid, safe, and economical movement of people and goods in Maui County.
Responsibilities
- Planning and implementation of all modes of transportation in Maui County, including those in the air and those on water and land.
- Planning and developing an efficient program to facilitate the rapid, safe, and economical movement of people and goods in Maui County.
- Coordinating Maui County's transportation programs with other county departments and with agencies of the state and federal government.
Goals
- Mitigate the escalating traffic problem within Maui County
- Provide transportation options for goods and for the residents of and visitors to Maui County
- Improve public awareness of traffic abatement measures and of transit opportunities

Maui Metropolitan Planning Organization
(Maui MPO)
The Maui Metropolitan Planning Organization (Maui MPO) is a federally mandated government agency formed in 2016 by the State of Hawaii and County of Maui to facilitate comprehensive planning for federally-funded or regionally significant transportation systems on the island of Maui.
The MPO and its partner agencies develop plans and programs for a multimodal transportation system that facilitates the movement of people and goods. Maui MPO does not construct projects or implement these programs directly.

MDOT periodically conducts studies through outside consultants to give the department direction for future projects, services, etc.
The Waihee Shuttle Feasibility Study was conducted by DanTec Associates. A written survey was distributed to residents and community meetings were held to assess their needs and produce options for the Department of Transportation to expand services in the area.
This addendum is an update of the Waikapu Facilities Master Plan, Final Submission - April 2015. Addendum 1 incorporates the revisions listed below to add the Department of Transportation (DOT) facility to the master plan report.
The department’s second Short Range Transit Plan was conducted by SSFM International. Its development process included rider surveys, community meetings, technical analysis, and coordination with key stakeholders. The plan is presented in six chapters:
- Introduction and Plan Background,
- Current Fixed Route System,
- Rider Demand Analysis,
- Service Analysis and Recommended Improvements,
- Financial Plan, and
- Action Plan
The department’s first Short Range Transit Plan was conducted by Urbitran Associates. The 2006-2010 Maui County Short Range Transit Plan (SRTP) involved extensive community outreach, technical analysis, and coordination with key stakeholders. The plan contained planning, policy and financial components that provides direction for implementing a public transportation system.
The Bus Stop Planning and Design Services report includes the assessment and inventory of bus stops within the Maui Bus fixed-route system. KFH Group was contracted to perform this service. The County wanted to continue to improve the service, but still look for areas of high needs that have not yet been met. The report also identifies recommended improvements to the system’s infrastructure and future bus stop locations.
