SMA Assessment


The purpose of the Special Management Area Assessment is to regulate any use, activity or operation that qualifies as a "Development". This Assessment Application provides a means to preserve, protect, and where possible, restore the natural resources of the Coastal Zone of Hawaii by establishing special controls on development within the area along the shoreline.

How To Apply:

Complete the Special Management Area Assessment Application and submit it to the Department of Planning.  Zoning & Flood Confirmation Form must be completed and signed by the Department of Planning prior to submittal.  If a Flood Development Permit is required, it must be issued prior to an SMA Exemption or Minor Permit approval.

Non-refundable filing fee. See Table 1 - Application Filing Fee. Checks are payable to the "County of Maui, Director of Finance".
