General Information
The Department of Fire and Public Safety hires new fire fighters only when there are enough vacancies
to fill a recruit class. The application process is coordinated by the Department of Personnel Services.
To check if applications are being accepted for the position of Fire Fighter Trainee, visit the Employment Opportunities section of the website. An announcement is also posted in the Maui News when applications are being accepted.
Application Process
Step 1: Employment Application
The first step in the application process is submitting an employment application, available from the Department of Personnel Services.
Step 2: Written Test
After your application is submitted, you will receive a notification by mail with the date, time, and location for your written test. The written test consists of sections on memory, reading comprehension, grammar and syntax, math, mechanical reasoning, and spatial reasoning. No previous firefighting knowledge is required.
Step 3: Physical Test
If you pass the written test, you will receive notification by mail with the date, time, and location for your physical test. The physical test consists of a variety of activities including a one mile run, a 100 meter swim, a ladder climb, a stair climb, and a field event.
Step 4: Interview
If you pass the physical test, you are placed on a list of eligible applicants, ranked by written test score. When the fire department has enough vacancies, interviews are scheduled to select Fire Fighter Trainees to fill those positions. Individuals selected during the interview process are placed in a recruit class for training.
Recruit Training
Recruit class consists of eighteen weeks of physical training, classroom education, and skills practice. Recruits are trained in a variety of disciplines including fire fighting, emergency medical care, extrication, hazardous materials, and technical rescue.
