The County of Maui Homeless Program Division, with its alignment with the Housing First initiative, is dedicated and focused to end homelessness in the County of Maui.
Our division is mainly tasked with two (2) major sectors in the fight against homelessness.
- First, we are the administrator of the Homeless Coordinated Entry System, a data driven program that is systematically addressing the most chronically homeless by quickly connecting them to the appropriate housing resource and services by priority of need in the most objective means possible.
- Secondly, our division is the point of contact for various departments and partnering agencies in our efforts to address illegal homeless encampments and other smaller homeless problem “hot spots,” all done with a measure of compassion for those who have fallen on hard times by extending the offer of services by way of Outreach workers. This addresses both the needs of the homeless individuals and the need for safety and hygiene.
The objective is to have homelessness in Maui County be rare, brief, and non-reoccurring by use of evidence-based best practices models such as the Housing First initiative.
“Homelessness will never end if we become tolerant of homelessness and if we become intolerant of homeless individuals.”
