Independent Nomination Board (INB)

Overview

The INB is comprised of nine members, one from each council residency area who are appointed by the mayor and approved by the council.  Members are responsible for recruiting, evaluating, interviewing and nominating individuals to serve on all County of Maui boards and commissions as well as the County Auditor, County Clerk, Corporation Counsel, and Prosecuting Attorney.

Power, Duties, & Functions

  • Recruit, evaluate, and present a list of nominees to the appointing authority (Mayor or Council) to serve on boards and commissions established by the charter and by ordinance.
  • Review procedures for submitting applications and the form of applications shall be established by the independent nomination board based on the requirements of each office, commission, or board.
  • With the occurrence of a vacancy due to death, resignation or removal, the independent nomination board shall submit, within sixty days of the occurrence, to the appointing authority (Mayor or Council) a list of nominees to fill the vacancy.
  • To the extent permitted by law, information related to the consideration of any applicant for nomination shall not be public.
  • Recruit, evaluate, and present a list of nominees to the council for the positions of: County Clerk and County Auditor.
  • Recruit, evaluate, and present a list of nominees to the mayor for the positions of: Corporation Counsel and Prosecuting Attorney.
