Residents urged to start planning during Hurricane Preparedness Week 2020

Mayor Michael Victorino announced that May 3 through May 9 is Hurricane Preparedness Week 2020.

Residents are urged to have a plan, build a kit and stay informed prior to hurricane season, which begins on June 1.

“Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, we must be diligent when it comes to hurricane preparedness,” Mayor Victorino said. “Families should start planning now to make sure they have their emergency plans and kits prepped ahead of any weather event or hurricane.”

Preparing for a hurricane includes reviewing and updating insurance policies, purchasing and replenishing hurricane emergency supplies, preparing your home, and developing evacuation and emergency plans. Residents should also follow health and safety guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to ensure hurricane plans incorporate measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The County of Maui has disaster and hurricane preparedness resources for residents available at mauicounty.gov/emergency.

Hurricane preparedness resources are also available through the National Weather Service at hurricanes.gov/prepare.
