Mayor Victorino releases statement of employee diagnosed with COVID-19

This morning, the County of Maui received official confirmation from the Hawaii Department of Health that an employee who works in the Office of the Mayor had tested positive for COVID-19. The employee alerted my office to this possibility on the evening of Sunday, Jan. 3. The asymptomatic employee, who last worked in the County Building on Thursday, Dec. 31, is in isolation at home.

According to the manager of the DOH Maui District Health Office, everyone who had close contact with the individual has already been notified by DOH contact tracers. It is very unlikely anyone who was not contacted by DOH has been affected. Public health protocols are strongly enforced in the County Building. All common areas in the building have been professionally disinfected and will be professionally sanitized again.

To ensure the health and safety of our employees, their families and the wider community, I have offered telework options for those in the building to work from home until further notice.

The County Building remains open. However, out of an abundance of caution, the public is urged to conduct business with Maui County online or to use the drop box fronting the County Building. Water and solid waste payments can be done in person at the Maui County Service Center or Maui County Small Business Resource Center located in Maui Mall.

We are taking these actions to ensure the health and safety of our employeestheir families and our community. I also remind everyone in Maui County to continue to follow all appropriate health and safety guidelines.
