Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision (Update)

UPDATE:

 

On Wednesday, June 15, 2022, at 11:04 a.m., the pedestrian succumbed to his injuries and died while at Kaiser Moanalua Hospital on Oahu.   The pedestrian is identified as Jason Walsh (51), known to frequent the Kahului area.


The Maui Police Department extends our deepest condolences to Mr. Walsh’s family and friends.


This is Maui County’s 12th traffic fatality of 2022, compared to six at the same time last year.

 

ORIGINAL:

 

On Thursday, May 26, 2022, at approximately 5:24 a.m., a motor vehicle collision occurred on Hana Highway (36) at the intersection of Hookele Street in Kahului.  

 

Preliminary investigation reveals that a white 2005 Honda Civic 4-door sedan, traveling westbound within the inner lane of Hana Highway, collided into a pedestrian traveling southbound crossing the highway.

 

As a result of this collision, the pedestrian, a 51-year-old-male known to frequent the Kahului area, sustained critical life-threatening injuries and was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center Emergency Room for treatment.  The operator of the Honda, a 54-year-old male from Haiku, did not report any injuries.  

 

Investigation reveals that:

 

The operator of the Honda was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the collision.   

 

The air bags did not deploy in the Honda.

 

The involvement of drugs and alcohol has yet to be determined as this investigation is ongoing.
