Mayor Victorino requests budget amendment to purchase Lahaina Crossroads Apartment Building

Mayor Michael Victorino is requesting up to $11 million to purchase the Lahaina Crossroads Apartment Building located at 767 Luakini St.

Mayor Victorino has met with the property owner over the past few months to emphasize the community benefits of the County’s acquisition of the 20-unit apartment complex. He believes the community will greatly benefit from long-term affordable rentals rather than short-term vacation rentals.

In June, tenants of the 20-unit building received “notices to vacate” to enable renovations of the individual units to convert them into transient vacation rentals as permitted by current zoning. The complex’s long-term tenants include retirees on fixed incomes, who are very worried about relocation prospects in the Lahaina area.

“I want to thank the landowner for negotiating in good faith out of consideration of the hardship these kupuna and other tenants would face if the planned conversion to vacation rentals were to proceed,” explained Mayor Victorino. “The acquisition of Lahaina Crossroads will mean move-in-ready, long-term rental units for our residents.”

In July, West Maui Councilmember Tamara Paltin introduced Resolution 112-162 urging the Maui County Council to authorize purchase of the apartment complex for the benefit of long-term tenants. “I fully support the County’s acquisition of this building,” she said. “I also appreciate the landowner’s consideration of our community’s well-being.”

The budget amendment requesting funding is posted on the Maui County Council’s meeting agenda for Tuesday, Sept. 20.
