Beach Parks Vulnerability and Adaptation Study available online

Maui County residents can now review online a study of sea-level rise and other coastal threats to 65 beach parks and adaptation strategies for each park by visiting https://www.mauicounty.gov/BPVAStudy.

Click on “Study Links” on the site for detailed project information and an interactive mapping tool.

“The mapping tool is very informative for our residents as well as Department of Parks and Recreation staff,” said Mayor Michael Victorino. “With climate change, we can’t begin too soon to plan for sea-level rise near Maui County’s nearshore assets.”

The website provides a project overview, resources and an adaptation and mapping tool. To learn about a specific beach park, the mapping tool will display a dashboard that shows a map with park facilities, sea-level rise zones, flood areas, sand deposits and other features. A tutorial and feedback study are also available.

The study dates back to 2020 when the Maui County Department of Parks and Recreation launched a project to assess the vulnerability of its beach parks for sea-level rise and other coastal threats as well as potential adaptive strategies for each park.

The project is ongoing and the website will be updated as future phases are completed.
