Mayor Victorino expresses support for Bill 159

Today Mayor Michael Victorino thanked the Maui County Council and various stakeholder groups for their collaboration on the passage of Bill 159, which restricts transient vacation rentals and prohibits parking of camper vans and similar vehicles used or rented for commercial transient accommodations.

“I support this positive step toward curbing the growth of vacation rentals, especially in residential areas, and preventing rented camper vans from being parked and used as visitor accommodations,” Mayor Victorino said. “I applaud the Council for collaboratively working with our residents, industry partners and other stakeholders on this legislation. Work such as this clearly demonstrates that when we listen to each other, work together and put our community first, we can achieve great things. I look forward to officially receiving this bill from the County Council for my signature.”

ILWU Business Agent and Political Action Coordinator Stephen West said: “Our organization is happy that this bill has passed. It’s the first of many steps that need to be taken to get vacation rentals out of our neighborhoods and back into resort areas. These transient vacation rentals have been driving up the cost of rentals because of the lack of rental housing for most people. Mayor Victorino has taken steps to take care of that, and we look forward to much more affordable housing built in neighborhoods for local people.”
