West Maui motorists should expect potential closures while firefighters remain on the scene at the Olowalu brush fire.
A large tree on fire adjacent to the roadway caused the temporary re-closure of Honoapiʻilani Highway.
The brush fire was estimated to be about 50 percent contained at approximately 6 p.m., according to Maui Fire Department. No evacuations are anticipated at this time.
The brush fire was reported at 3:02 p.m. and was fueled by strong winds. Honoapi’ilani Highway between Lahaina Bypass and Luawai Street was closed around 4 p.m. due to low visibility from heavy smoke.
After the report of the fire, Maui Fire Department responded with two tankers, five engine companies and two air resources, along with tankers and heavy machinery from private companies.
