Maui is still in an active fire season and the Maui Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) urges the public to sign up for MEMA alerts to receive emergency notifications. Today’s brush fire is a good example of the importance of staying informed. The alerts are sent to registered users via text message, email, pager and/or voicemail, based on preference. MEMA alerts allow public safety officials to provide emergency notifications and direction.
On Saturday, August 26th, Maui Fire Department (MFD) responded to a brush fire at approximately 12:45 p.m. located near Kaʻanapali at Kualapa Loop and Anapuni Loop mauka of the Kaʻanapali resort area.
Firefighters arrived on scene at approximately 12:55 p.m. and stopped forward progress of a seven-acre fire before it would reach any homes or communities. MEMA activated four sirens around 1:10 p.m. from Wahikuli to Honakowai in the area to notify the community.
Maui County Officials advise the public to remain clear of the area while MFD continue working in the area.
As of 5:00 p.m. the evacuation orders have been lifted for the community of the Kaʻanapali area. At the time of this release, the fire is 90% contained and there were no reported injuries or structure damage.
MFD is still investigating the cause of the fire.
