WAILUKU, Maui – A program under the County of Maui Department of Water Supply (DWS) is offering customers an opportunity to replace their older toilets with new, high-efficiency models at no cost. Residents are encouraged to go to the county website to apply for a free toilet while supplies last. Switching out older toilet models with new, ultrahigh efficiency (UHET) versions help lower water costs for customers and support island conservation efforts. Bathroom toilets, at about 25 to 30 percent of indoor water usage required for a single-family household, use the most indoor water in a home, followed by laundry machines and showers. Many older toilets use up to 1.6 gallons of water per flush; UHET versions use 0.8 gallons per flush. Some restrictions apply and toilet replacements are currently only available to single-family, residential, DWS customers. For full Toilet Replacement Program rules and guidelines, visit www.mauicounty.gov/227/Water-Conservation or call DWS customer service at (808) 270-7730.
