Dept. of Parks and Recreation to Give Aquatics Facilities Master Plan Recommendations
WAILUKU, Maui – A consultant team for the Department of Parks and Recreation will present recommendations to the public on a master plan for the county’s aquatic facilities.
The public meeting will be held 6:30 p.m. June 14 at the Waikapu Community Center. It will cover recommendations for new facilities; renovation of existing pools; and a description of projected costs for development, staffing and maintenance.
For the last year, the department has been working with one of the country’s leading aquatic engineering and design consulting firms, Counsilman-Hunsaker, to prepare a master plan for the county’s aquatic facilities. Preparation of the master plan comprised several phases, including a review of existing facilities and a series of community open houses held throughout the county.
“Our aquatic facilities are aging and require constant maintenance. They’ve been built piecemeal over the last 50 years and we’ve never had a long-term vision for these facilities,” said Ka‘ala Buenconsejo, Parks and Recreation director. “We are looking forward to taking the next steps in this process to be able to honor the rich history of swimmers in Maui.”
