Public informational meeting set for energy conservation code amendments

A public informational meeting has been set for 6 p.m. Feb. 20 at the Department of Planning conference room for proposed Maui County amendments to the 2015 International Energy Conservation Code.

Among other things, the recommended amendments take into consideration Hawaii’s tropical environment. The revisions also are aimed at creating opportunities for the use of less costly local construction materials and building methods.

“The energy conservation code provides minimum energy conservation requirements for new buildings to reduce energy costs,” said Mayor Michael Victorino. “More efficiently built construction will lower utility bills and emissions and reduce the county’s dependence on imported oil. We all want a clean, healthy environment, and lower electric bills would help our residents with the high cost of living in Hawaii.”

The Feb. 20 meeting will feature presentations from Howard Wiig, energy analyst from the Hawaii State Energy Office and the county Department of Public Works Development Services Administration. There will be an opportunity for public comments.

The new code amendments would replace the existing International Energy Conservation Code, adopted by the county in 2009. Last year, the Department of Public Works made draft changes to the code and sought input from interested individuals and groups.

The informational meeting should be of particular interest to construction and building design professionals. The conference room is in the Kalana Pakui building at 250 S. High St. in Wailuku.
