1. Which vaccines are currently available on Maui?

Currently the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 and the Moderna vaccines are being administered on Maui. Both require two doses, given 3 to 4 weeks apart respectively.

2. Does the County of Maui oversee the COVID-19 vaccination program?

No. It is a national program under the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), administered in the state by the Hawaii Department of Health (DOH).

3. When can Maui County residents get a COVID-19 vaccine?

4. Who are in Hawaii’s priority groups?

Priority 1a: Healthcare personnel, first responders, long-term care facility residents

Priority 1b: Frontline essential workers and those 75 years of age or older

Priority 1c. Those between the ages of 65-74 years, those between 16 to 64 years old with high risk health conditions and additional essential worker

Priority 2:   Anyone else over the age of 16 who would like to get a vaccine.

5. Who is eligible to receive vaccines right now?

Hawaii is currently vaccinating those in the 1a and 1b priority groups.

6. Where can I get a vaccine?

Maui Memorial Medical Center is the only location on Maui island that is accepting vaccine reservations at this time. The drive-through vaccine clinic at UH Maui College is a closed Point-of-Distribution (POD) at this time, reserved for those in the highest priority groups. As more vaccine supply becomes available, expect more locations to open in other regions of the island.

Lanaʻi residents may contact Lanaʻi Community Hospital or CVS Pharmacy for vaccine information, Molokaʻi residents may contact Molokaʻi General Hospital for specific information.

7. Is it true there are not enough vaccines for everyone?

Delayed shipments have temporarily disrupted vaccine supplies on the island Maui, but the shortage is temporary. There are sufficient vaccines available for those awaiting their second dose.

9. My father got his first vaccine and needs his second dose in a couple of weeks, what do I do now?

10. How much does the vaccine cost?

There is no cost for the vaccine; there may be a modest administrative fee.

11. Do I have to get the vaccine if I’ve already had COVID?

It is recommended you still get the vaccine because the protection and immunity of post-virus antibodies may weaken and could eventually disappear over time.

12. What about children? Should n they be vaccinated?

No, not at this time. The Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine is only for those age 16 and older. No vaccine has yet been approved for children.

13. What can I do to protect myself from contracting COVID while I wait for my vaccine?

Continue with wearing face masks, social distancing, avoiding crowds, and frequent handwashing to protect yourself and others prior to, and after, receiving both doses of the vaccine.

14. Do I still have to wear a mask after getting both vaccine doses?
